ezPower / credit card transactions
« on: February 04, 2012, 01:53:29 PM »
We've had a couple situations now where a credit card transaction has gone through - i.e., shows up in Charge It Pro - but does NOT print a receipt or register as being paid in EZP.

The first time, I just got to hear about it second-hand.  Nothing happened the first time, so the clerk swiped it again and ended up with two charges.  I had the clerk call Charge It Pro and they straightened it out.

This time I got to look at the Sales Window after the first attempt at swiping.  Again, it ended up being recorded in the Charge It Pro client, but in the Sales Window, the transaction shows up as Open (i.e., not paid for).  I "closed" it by just using cash.

Anyway, I'm wondering how this might be prevented.  I hate leaving the clerks with the Charge It Pro login to be able to check whether a charge has really gone through or not.

Thanks!

ezPower / Payment Methods
« on: January 30, 2012, 08:43:01 AM »
I have the General Retail, latest version (10?) of EZP.

This is actually a two-part question, but the parts are similar.  I'm looking for a good way to handle Gift Certificates that I handle, as well as Donations that I give to charitable groups.

First, it seems that either case would require finding the appropriate Payment Method.  I want to be able to handle either situation just like any other transaction - to both keep them on the books, and to be able to adjust inventory as I go along.

However, it seems that most Payment Methods are fixed, either working as the standard Cash, Check or Credit Card - or for some external application that works with EZP.  I thought that the "Gift Card" might work, but apparently only with external software.  Then I thought "Food Stamps" or "Undef 18" might work if renamed, but I run into the same thing there.

Is there possibly a way of either adding a new Payment Method, or duplicating an existing one, e.g., "Cash" or "Check"?  And then just renaming them?  I suppose I could "share" one of them, e.g., rename "Check" to appear as "Check/GC" - but I'd rather keep them separate for sake of bookkeeping.

And for Donations, I suppose I could go into the Customer info and use Levels, renaming "Free" to "Donations" - but it seems that I'd rather handle them just by single transactions.

How has anyone else handled these?

Thanks!

That is the same error message I've gotten when the "bind to" isn't set to the IP address.  Does the drop-down window there give you an alternative to "any_ip_address"?

You mention Verizon, though - is that who you're service is through?  Mine isn't through any kind of cell service, it's through a cable modem.

I've got mine set up for gmail, and it works.

This is the way I have it set up to work, on my system, anyway:

Name and Email Address:  self-explanatory
Authentication Method:  "Auth Login"
Username and Password:  self-explanatory
Outgoing Mail:  "mail.(my gmail username).com"
Port Number: 2626 (I think that's mentioned by gmail)
Auto Connect to Internet:  checked
Bind to:  hit the drop-down arrow to choose your IP address (note, this seems to often want to default to "any ip address", which won't work for me)
Encoding:  Western European
Send all message MIME encoded:  checked
Send all messages as HTML:  checked

Anyway, I have had the mail stop working every once in a while, and it seems that it's usually the "bind to" that changes back to the "any ip address" that stops it from working.  Also, somehow the IP address just shows up in there - it's not something I had to add manually.

The emailing of reports is a great feature, though, once you get familiar with it.

ezPower / Re: discount by category
« on: January 10, 2012, 04:41:17 PM »
I found this earlier thread about importing and exporting.  This is exactly what I want to do to add a few discount levels for all my items.

I'm comfortable with using Excel for it and all that.  What I wonder, though, is how it might affect quantities.

If I understand right, if I export the entire inventory list, the quantities listed in the program will not change, right?

When I'm done editing and want to import them, do I need to zero out all quantities before I import?  Would it effectively double my inventory counts if I don't?

Thanks!

Uh oh, I just remembered the option in "General Settings", where I can choose "one item (qty) per line".  It seems that's what toggles back and forth between the "+1/duplicate" function and the "quantity" function in the Sales Window.

It seems that I can de-select the "one item per line", but then I lose some other functionality that I need.  I just need to evaluate which way is preferable.

This sounds like such a basic question, but here goes:  How do I change the quantity of an item being rung up?

The only way I can presently find is to use the "Edit" function.  That does change the quantity, but on the Z-out report, there's a quantity of "1" assigned, no matter how many were sold.

In the Help manual, it mentions a "Quantity" button (the one with the spiraling numbers icon) that looks like it's supposed to be in the Functions I can add to that Sales Screen Toolbar - but I see no such function in my list of possibilities.

For now I'm reduced to using the "Duplicate" function for as many items as I'm selling, which is sometimes a little cumbersome.

Thanks for any advice!

ezPower / Re: Card terminal integration?
« on: January 07, 2012, 02:13:10 PM »
Hi Bob,

No, I just started using EZ Power a couple months ago, and was still using my old cc processor, United Bank Card, for the first while.

When I inquired to EZ Power, it sounded like ChargeItPro is currently the only choice, though that may not be the case (I didn't push for alternatives).

Yes, the ChargeItPro works right within the EZP software - you can't tell that it's anything other than EZP doing anything.  You just hit "Finish", "Credit Card", and swipe the card.  That's it, other than grabbing the receipts about 5 seconds later.

Of course, you can set it (in EZP) to include a couple of prompts if you want, but I decided to turn those off.  And you can also easily enter the cc info manually, in the screen that pops up with the "credit card" function.

The CIP software seems really good, too.  There's a separate program to log into if you want to create reports, see what your charges are for a given time period, see what's been batched or not, send the batch manually if you want, and a lot more.  It's far more information & flexibility than I've had before.

Unless they really surprise me with their charges, I'd highly recommend it to anyone.

Klaus,  we just gave up our external card-swiper to start using ChargeItPro, which fully integrates with EZ Power.  It's been working amazingly well.

The only new hardware required was a small magnetic strip reader that connects to the PC via a USB port.  The rest of it is software-driven, and is extremely easy to use.  It was explained to me that a new law regarding credit/debit cards eliminates the need for a PIN pad.

The comparison of processing charges to our former system was very favorable (actually less expensive than our old one), though I haven't had the first month's charges yet.

I'd recommend it without hesitation.

ezPower / Re: Printing Reports
« on: January 04, 2012, 09:14:03 AM »
Well, not that I can think of.  But I've been trying to think of what might have.

What is interesting is that the program says that "if you want to print a copy", to do that before you "transfer list to file" (or "add stock from list" or any of the other choices).  However, the file that it saves is a .txt file that I can print out - or convert to .csv format - and may be what I'd been printing out earlier.  So there is a sort of workaround, it's just a little different than what's suggested.

By the way, I'm not sure what use the "adjust stock" function was intended for, but I'm finding it to be the perfect way to transfer inventory between business locations.

ezPower / Printing Reports
« on: January 03, 2012, 05:49:59 PM »
First, my label printer and receipt printers work just fine for all the usual functions.  And for many of my reports, I use my Acrobat "printer" to make a pdf, and that works great.

However, whenever I've tried printing my "Adjust Stock" reports lately, something seems to go haywire.  I found it first when trying to use my receipt printer for that report - I got multiple pages (a few yards worth), consisting only of the store name heading.  I shut the printer down, rather than wait to see whether it would print something else.

I've also tried it with the Acrobat printer, and it more or less freezes up while loading all the pages - I've seen it up to as many as 32,000 pages that it says it will print!

Anyway, with whatever printer, EZ POS freezes up and I have to shut it down and loose the entries I've made.  It works fine when I start it up again, but I still can't print the report I need.

Any suggestions?

(by the way, I COULD print the report successfully just a couple weeks ago!)

Thanks!

Bob

ezPower / "Generic Exception"
« on: November 11, 2011, 05:25:01 PM »
I have the network version of EZ 13 on a Windows 7 64-bit pc.  I have the cashier pc set up as the server, and the office pc set up as the client (in case of network trouble, wanted to make sure the customers could still be taken care of).

It's worked fine all day (just set it up yesterday), until I went in to edit a product on the client pc.  I kept getting a message when trying to finalize the edit that I wasn't connected to the "product database" (or something to that effect) - and was asked if I wanted to make the edited product into a new product.  I did not, so I cancelled it.

After doing this twice, I thought it might be the network not working.  I couldn't get the "connect" function to work (though I could access the network through Windows Explorer), so I decided to exit EZ and re-open it.

When I tried to open it, I get the normal opening screen for a moment, followed by an error message of "Generic Exception", with "OK" as the only button.  On clicking that, the error message and the program both close.

This happens every time I try now, even after rebooting.

The program on the server still seems to work fine.  What can I do?

Thanks!  (BTW, I think this is an excellent program!)

ezPower / Practice Mode
« on: November 10, 2011, 11:27:06 AM »
Is there a "practice mode" available for training new users?

I thought about just using the demo version, but I think I'd prefer the training with the setup they'll actually be using.

Thanks!
