Something is not adding up. From Mercury's documentation you will only get a AP* when attempting a duplicate charge. You can not get this error code on the first attempt. If I understand your description you got the AP* on the first attempt. This doens't make sense.
"Mercury‘s Duplicate Logic
When a POS submits a transaction request which exactly repeats the same amount, card number and invoice number of an already-approved transaction in the current batch, the second transaction is considered a duplicate request.
In order to prevent a merchant from unintentionally sending through the same transaction more than once, Mercury uses what we term an enhanced duplicate logic. This logic assumes that the second transaction is a true duplicate and responds by replacing the duplicate request with the original transaction. In this process, the host approves the second duplicate transaction without actually charging the card a second time. Instead, the host response includes the text string ―AP*‖ and uses the same the AuthCode and RefNo of the original approved transaction."
