Coupons always apply to the whole sale by percentage or a fixed amount.  You can have a coupon discount by a fixed amount.  Or use the discount button on the item

I'm trying to grasp the difference in how "coupons" and "discounts" are used.

It seems that "coupons" can be applied as either a percentage or as a specific dollar amount - but only to an entire sale and not to an individual item.

And "discounts" can be applied as only a percentage and NOT a specific dollar amount - but to EITHER an entire sale OR to an individual item.

Other than that, is there some other basic difference in how the two work?  I like the flexibility it provides, I just need to get the terminology straight!
